RARITAN TWP. — Don’t fall for a jury duty telephone scam, Raritan Township police and the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Officer warned today. It’s an attempt to get you to pay money to a crook pretending to be a police or sheriff’s officer.
The caller, who identifies himself as a Lt. Stevens, accuses the person called of missing jury duty and claims an arrest warrant is out.
According to Sheriff Fred Brown, the “officer” says they can avoid arrest by purchasing a Green Dot card, which can be done over the phone or online, and then calling the “lieutenant” back with an authorization number to withdraw the money from the account. Money amounts required to avoid arrest have reached the vicinity of $ 500, he said.
“Legitimate law enforcement officers do not tell people to provide money card information to avoid arrest as a lawful arrest is done ‘in person,’” Brown noted.
