Legislation that would allow counties to assess a fee on all communication devices capable of dialing an emergency communications service (911) was approved by the Missouri House of Representatives and is now in the Senate. It has made little progress there and, as of Friday, had not been placed on the calendar.

House Bill 1572 is sponsored by Rep. Jeanie Lauer (R-Dist. 32) and is co-sponsored by 15 other House members.

The full House approved the third and final reading on March 13. Bootheel Representatives Holly Rehder (R. Dist.148) and Donna Lichtenegger (R. Dist. 146) voted for the bill, while Todd Richardson (R. Dist. 152) and Kent Hampton (R. Dist. 150) voted against it. Stoddard County does not currently have a representative.

The act allows a county or the City of St. Louis to impose, upon approval by a majority of the voters in the county or city, a monthly fee of up to $ 1.50 on any device capable of contacting 911, except for prepaid customers, in lieu of a telephone service tax or a countywide sales tax. The fee is to be paid into the Missouri 911 Service Trust Fund, except, if the Department of Revenue collects the fee on behalf of a county…………………continues on The Daily Statesman
