Consumers Energy continuing to warn customers about credit-card payment scam

JACKSON, MI – Consumers Energy continues to warn customers about a telephone scam demanding people pay their utility bill through prepaid credit cards.

More than 300 incidents have been reported this year where callers have falsely claimed to work for Consumers Energy, and some were reported as recently as last week in Adrian and Muskegon.

In both cases, business owners did not pay and contacted Consumers Energy directly to ask about their accounts, according to a news release.

“We continue working to raise awareness among business owners, residents and Consumers Energy customers that these scams, plain and simple, are designed to rob you of your money,” Michael Williams, director of corporate security for Consumers Energy, said in a statement.

A typical scam involves a caller, who can speak English and Spanish, demanding payment for a Consumers Energy bill within an hour, according to the release. The customers is told to purchase a Green Dot prep…………………continues on MLive.com
